If you are like so many folks today, you are becoming more aware of your so called carbon footprint. There is certainly plenty we can all do to play our part in reducing our personal footprint. Installing solar powered outdoor lighting is but one suggestion and something most of us are able to do simply because most homes use some type of security lighting. The solar outdoor security light, or solar flood lights, are now replacing the more conventional power hungry options as home owners across the country do their bit to save on energy.

In a world of increasing energy bills having an option to use any form of solar power that has to be good thing. It will only be a matter of time when the solar powered light shall become the best low voltage option for lighting domestic homes and commercial buildings. But if your primary concern is security then you might want to be mindful of the voltage when making your first purchase. Lights used for lighting the footpath from the garage to the house may well offer sufficient glow, but if you're after a flood light effect, then you need to focus on brightness when shopping for your solar powered outdoor light.

Solar Outdoor Light - Not as Bright as Conventional Lighting!

Because we've become accustomed to the brilliant bright light of conventional security lighting, a lot of people complain that the solar powered lighting falls far short of what they've been used to. Well, it is true, but the solar powered light also casts a different kind of light, so even if it was a bright it would still look different due to it's hue. This said, it's perfectly adequate for the job, and if anything, these 'floodlight' types we've gotten used to are not really necessary.

Particularly for home security, you need to invest in a solar outdoor light that provides sufficient brightness so that you have adequate security around the house and garden. The brighter the light, the bigger the deterrent to would-be criminals. To be certain you purchase the correct solar outdoor lighting from the outset, make sure discuss your needs with a store professional. It's not just a super bright light you need, but also one which will floodlight the area you have to cover too.

It doesn't take much to setup a solar garden light, or lights, and once they're in place, there's very little maintenance left to do apart from clean away the occasional leaves or cobwebs. It feels just great to have your very own electricity-free security lighting welcome you home at night, or alert you to the arrival of visitors, intruders, and sometimes, the neighbor's pet cat. The better our home security is, the more peace of mind we experience.

How do Solar Outdoor Lights Work?

Well, as already mentioned, there's no electricity used from the home supply to power this type of security lighting. What actually happens is this; the solar lights work by using small solar panels. These panels take the sun's energy during the daytime and store it into the light's internal batteries. These batteries become charged up and are used to power energy efficient light at night. Once day breaks, the solar panels capture the sun's energy once again, and so the power supply is always charged up and ready to use.

After dark, the lights are usually triggered automatically by sensors or manually by a switch, just in the same way as the wired models illuminate the areas. You're probably wondering by now what happens if there's a spate of overcast days and no visible sun to keep the batteries charged. Don't worry, the modern solar outdoor light doesn't need a lot to power it, and even on those dull days the solar panels can capture enough daylight to keep them operating.

Did you know that solar outdoor lighting is becoming so widespread that manufacturers now make a whole range of light options to suit modern day needs. Although it's the solar powered security light which is the most sought after, it is just one option available. We can now find solar deck lighting, solar pool lights, and even solar Christmas lights for those big ole trees outdoors during the festive season.

It’s a simple fact, the better illuminated the exterior of your home is, the better equipped it is to deter those would be intruders. Security lighting has become reasonably priced over recent years and so much more efficient, that it makes no sense whatsoever not to secure your home with this line of protection, and especially now that solar lighting is but a one-off cost, adding nothing extra to those costly electricity bill.
