The Humble Garden Shed. A Home away from Home for Dad's!

Build Your Own Shed Or Assemble your own shed! There is a difference!

It's often joked that once you get a garden storage shed you've succumb to the trappings on the modern day rat race. Any kind of shed building means that Dad will now become an aging geek who treats his new outdoor shed as a kind of second home. All I can say to that is 'so what!' For me and countless others, the outdoor storage shed is a safe haven from the wife's persistent nagging, and somewhere I can keep and do all those little things that are not welcome indoors, and not to mention a great place to keep all the garden furniture and tools.

Even in the 21st century, it's surprising how many folks still lack any real DIY skills. But worry not! You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll learn about using tools and working with diagrams just by putting together a garden shed at you leisure. It really is a great way to get familiar with those DIY projects

Now if you're a bit of a Handy Andy around the home, then you'll surely be able to show other folks how to build a shed. Building your own shed ensures you get exactly what you want out of your little garden hideaway. A shed project can be designed from scratch and should be less hassle than those other jobs around the home like building onto an existing structure such as a fireplace or a deck for example. Your shed will not affect the layout of your house so there is plenty of room for blunders along the way, if you're a bit of a DIY disaster.

But even the less dexterous of us, can't go too far wrong these days with all the easy to read modern shed plans and DIY shed kits that are around. It really is quite difficult to cock-up so long as you take your time and get a little help from family members and or mates. I could hardly be referred to as Mr. Do-it-yourself, but even with my fumbling fingers, I managed to successfully erect a great Black and Decker wooden shed kit on the very first attempt.

If building your own shed seems a little daunting, get the son, son-in-law, a mate, or next door neighbor to lend a hand, because despite the so called easy-to-follow instructions, it can be a pretty frustrating affair first time around. But that said, it's all very doable whether it's a nice new tool shed, a little workshop for doing all those jobs, or a place top store bikes, garden tools and family junk, the designs are all pretty simple. The most important thing is not how it looks as much as how it's insulated and whether it's study or not. Cosmetic tweaks and adjustments can be applied at a later date, but your new structure must be ready for the elements first and foremost.

Before you build your garden shed, it is important to figure out exactly what you need from it. If it is a tool shed, then you should figure out precisely where, and how, you plan to store your tools. The same goes for anything that you want to put into it when you are finished. Personally, before I built my own shed, I marked a wall in my house with pieces of tape representing the various tools which I needed to store in it. This allowed me to figure out precisely what sizes the wall needed to be, as well as where to put hooks when I was done. I could even figure out where to put my workbench, and store my wood supplies, which saved me quite a bit of agonizing when I was done.

So, whether it's to be a wood shed, or something sturdier such as one of the metal storage buildings we're seeing more of these days, a garden shed will probably turn out to be one of the most practical home improvement projects you're ever likely to do. It's a great hideaway too for those of us that seek a little refuge from time to time. So c'mon, why not build your own shed? It's really very easy!

Build your Own Shed but only if your an Expert at DIY! - Submitted by Roger W

Ok, let's summarise this build your own shed malarkey once and for all! Every DIY promotion and every instruction pamphlet will have you believe that assembling your new shed construction is so easy, even a monkey could do it…………..with his eyes shut! So when poor old Dad is getting himself into a right ole tiff and feeling pretty dam useless, don't despair. He's not alone and he's not to blame!

Maybe you are looking at a smart new cedar shed, metal shed, or common ole wooden shed that fits so well into any garden. Whichever type you prefer, don't be fooled by the so named 'easy instructions' unless you really are a dab hand at DIY, and I mean a dab-hand! Otherwise, do yourself a favor and get in a building contractor, or at the very least, a good odd job man, to tackle the assembly for you. Even those small sheds, or the really common outdoor shed, if it all goes wrong you're likely to go mad! The bottom line is that it's only a one off cost as many sheds these days well outlive their owners!

Build your own Shed Dad! – Submitted by Kim Louis (thanks for the laughs Kim!)

They say that a man's home is his castle, but not if he's got a misses indoors it's not! The good lady wife pretty much rules the roost in our house which is why I decided to build my own shed. It was easier than I thought, but then I am a bit of a Handy Andy when it comes to DIY. I also have 4 daughters and 1 son, and the lad kept on saying, "Go on Pops, please, please build your own shed Dad!. Well, I did and it not only serves a very practical storage space for garden and household junk, but it's a great place for me and my boy to escape to on those days when we've had a gutful from all those clucking hens indoors. An English man's home is his shed, and I would urge any husband and father out there to either build, or have installed, his own shed. You'll not regret it.

Build your own Shed Why Not? - Submitted by Sid Beacher

It might seem a bit daft at first to build your own shed, especially with the cheapo shed kits that can be had for a song, but when you look a little deeper there are many reasons why it's the best option. Firstly, I made my own plans to my own specs and this meant that I controlled the size, shape and security aspect. The wood was much thicker and therefore the construction a lot sturdier. I omitted a window in the design for security reasons and also used concealed hinges and a Mortice lock. Now, my shed might not have saved me any money, but it's by far a better deal in the long run, not to mention a bit of personal achievement.

Warning! Building your own Shed can Damage your Marriage! - Submitted by A. Wilson

It’s not really funny, but a kind of warning to others who are not handy around the home. My next door neighbour came home one day as pleased as punch with his new assembly pack shed kit. The whole family came out to watch him get things ready as he whistled with delight laying out the parts across the lawn. Well, within 45 minutes he became so frustrated that the whole family was told to sod off indoors and leave him alone.

4 painful days later and still no nearer to having anything assembled that remotely resembled a garden shed he took a sledge hammer and smashed up the entire project into firewood. His wife saw the man she loved and married turn into an unrecognizable monster over a DIY shed and still to this day they are not really on back on speaking terms. That was nearly 7 weeks ago.
