Watch Out, there's a
Thief About!

Some of the older people reading this will remember that British campaign aimed at making folks more mindful about the many thieves lurking around looking for vulnerable homes to rob. That campaign is no longer running but the criminals are still out there, probably in greater numbers than ever before.

Austerity measures in western countries are set to continue in 2012, and that means there will a be a lot of desperate people struggling to make ends meet. Sadly, this results in the continued escalation of house break-ins around the country. It's crucial that we continue to secure our property from invaders more so in the present time than when the economy is good.

Setting Up DIY Home Security Systems Around the Home

Many concerned households are either installing DIY Home Security Systems themselves or having them installed professionally. Just about all the middle classes are looking at home alarm equipment as a must have. Particularly popular these days is the new range of wireless home alarm systems which are now readily available. Whether choosing from DIY home alarm systems or getting the professionals in to install your home security for you, one thing is certain and that is the times dictate we must have it in the twenty first century.

Real Consumer Home Security Reviews to the Rescue!

Unfortunately, shopping for do it yourself home security systems, which includes home alarm equipment, double and triple locking doors and windows, and security lights etc, means that living in an urban fortress is becoming a sign of the times as the gap between those who have and those who haven't increases. There's nothing wrong with defending our homes with a bit of added protection of course, but too many safety measures in streets really does take the community spirit out of a neighborhood. This is especially true when you see security cameras following passersby, hi-tech wireless home alarm systems watching over the bricks and mortar, and ferocious guard dogs salivating and snarling at anything that moves on the other side of the fence.

You may hear the old folks talking about how the neighbours used to look out for one another and how safe it was to pop to the shops and leave all your doors and windows open without worrying about being burgled. Indeed, there stories are true, but with the breakdown of community sprit along with families working all the hours god sends, almost every modern home has a Handy Andy up a ladder installing DIY home alarm systems around the property the moment they move into their new home.

Although the new range of DIY Home Security Systems are supposed to be easy to install, don't let the sales hype fool you into thinking you'll have your own DIY home alarm systems up and working in a jiffy, if you're not much of a handyman around the house. If you are comfortable with a box of tools, then you shouldn't have any problems, but if dexterity is not your strong point, then you'll do everyone a favour if you get someone in to set up your home alarm equipment for you. Another thing you might want to consider when shopping for home security is to invest in modern wireless home alarm systems available today, although this will put the price up somewhat over the cable options.

It wasn't really until the early 1970's that the working class Britain stated to install home surveillance systems, and a lot of this was due to the fact that people were starting to become a bit more wealthy than previous generations, and this meant more money spend on real estate, and more possession purchased to put inside. In other words, there was more to nick than ever before. Showing a home security sign of some sort was a good deterrent for those opportunist house burglars. The old alarm systems which were easy to bypass, actually encouraged theft because they advertised there was something indoors worth stealing, but the newer, more sophisticated alarm systems for the home were headaches that opportunistic crooks just did not need.

If you've not checked the latest wireless home alarm systems yet, you will see that the both the DIY Home Security Systems and the more sophisticated options are pretty ingenious. But in a world of increasing tidiness and practicality, it is the wireless home alarm systems that are becoming the most sought after. The most important features of the modern home alarm equipment is the security of the system itself, meaning that they are nowhere near as easy to fool as those systems of yesteryear, and that simply translates to better security for homes and families.

DIY Home Security Systems are often installed by the men of the house, but it's crucial that they are fitted to provide maximum benefit to your home security. In other words, don't treat DIY home alarm systems as something that just needs bunging together wherever happens to be handy. It's likely that your home alarm equipment is going to be in place for some years to come, so if you're not 100% sure where it should be installed in order to provide maximum security, then spend a bit extra and get the advice of a professional home security service. Remember, this will only be a one-off cost.

The Motion Detector Alarm: Finally, it really doesn't cost an arm and a leg to have an effective alarm these days. Take a standard Mini motion detector alarm which usually comes with a remote control. These little devices have incredibly loud sirens activated by the simple press of a button. These little motion sensor alarm gadgets are ideal for single rooms in homes, office, sheds and cars. Very handy, very effective, and inexpensive too!

Best Smoke Alarms, Smoke Detectors

The residents and the family possessions are not only at risk from a potential intruder but from fire too. If you have secured your home with any kind or security system, don't overlook the importance of installing smoke detectors too. These simple, inexpensive, and easy to install wireless contraptions can, and do, safe people, valuables, and buildings.

If your home has smoke alarms of any kind, do yourself a favour and make regular testing of these as much a part of your household chores as say washing and ironing the laundry once a week.

Types of Smoke Alarms

There are 3 basic types of smoke alarms/detectors available for homes. Which ones you chose will depend where they are to be installed in the house. These three smoke alarms are: Heat detectors, Optical smoke alarms, and Ionisation smoke alarms. If you're unsure what alarms to buy, just have a chat with the one selling them prior to purchase. They'll soon put you right.

Heat Detectors: These types of alarms are ideal for kitchens. Not smoke alarms as such because they're not actually sensitive to smoke at all, but they are good fire alarms which serves the same purpose of a smoke alarm. The reason heat detectors are perfect for kitchen use is because they won't be set off by cooking fumes like standard smoke detectors. Unfortunately, they are quite expensive compared to smoke alarms and not as easy to find either.

Optical Smoke Alarms: The optical smoke alarm is ideal for detecting a smouldering fire, that is a fire that produces plenty of smoke. These types of fires typically break out in soft furniture and various furnishings. They are less sensitive to fires that are more flame than smoke, so as you can see, it matters what types of alarms are installed where in the home.

The Ionisation Smoke Alarm: Despite the fancy name, the ionisation smoke alarms are by far the most common types used in homes. These alarm types are best suited to detect fast flaming fires. Fires in this category will include fires in oils or fats. In the UK there were a lot of these fires before the new deep fryers came into being, often referred to as 'chip pan fires. The ionisation smoke alarms are less sensitive to the smoky smouldering types of fire.

Closing Notes: Across the world there have been some extreme weather patterns happening at the end of 2011 and into the first weeks of 2012. Unfortunately, bad weather, coupled with the darkness of winter, is a breeding ground for petty criminals. Winds and rains mute the sound of prowlers, and blocked roads caused by heavy snowfalls or flash flooding, can keep folks from reaching their homes occasionally, which means there will be more opportunities for house burglars. With security comes peace of mind, and this is why today's sophisticated and affordable home alarm systems are a good investment for residential properties.

* Security Tidbits Below

Don't make the mistakes that we made :(

We have been burgled 3 times in the last 12 years. All I can say is that complacency in situations like this is your enemy. My wife and I became complacent after the first break in because we thought that the odds of it happening again were extremely remote. We were away on holiday at the time, and just thought we would take better precautions next time we went away. We did not know anybody personally who had been burgled before and thought that we had just been unlucky. A few years later, it happened again, only this time it was the garage that got broken into, not the house. We placed bigger and better locks on the garage doors and left it at that. More recently we had our third break in, only this time the house was gutted of many valuables and sentimental items as we slept in our beds upstairs.

You can imagine our faces and our fear when we came down in the morning. It took all of this before we stopped worrying about the costs and began worrying about our own safety and peace of mind. We now have state of the art wireless home security systems installed with the only regret that we should have done this years ago. By Anonymous

A Home Security Camera System Makes us Feel Secure! - Doesn't it?

Some people would agree that there has never been a greater need for home security camera systems, especially now that many homes have valuable items indoors that are worth risking a break-in from the opportunist house burglars. Others however, think that it's nothing but poppycock and paranoia and the real issue is the breakdown of communities which has caused folks to go running out shopping for a home security camera system, and other security features for the home. In the past, neighbours would look out for each other's property, but nowadays a lot of us don't even know, or know very little of, the people residing next door.

Are we really too busy to interact with the locals? Perhaps this is the real reason why so many residences feel the need to install house alarms, and cameras, so that they themselves can sit in their living rooms with one eye constantly on the security monitor!

Business & Home Surveillance Systems getting better:

Not only are alarms and security devices for homes and businesses getting better and better all the time, but they're becoming more affordable too. They weren't always within peoples means. So expensive and cumbersome were the hard wired siren systems of a generation ago, that many people bought mock boxes as a deterrent. These were little more than empty boxes that looked like alarm bells, yet they had no guts or wiring. Today, fortunately, most of us can afford to invest in some pretty impressive security devices for our property, and thank goodness for that.

Window Locks as Important as Door Locks

Believe it or not, but a lot of people secure their doors with security locks but totally forget about doing the same for the windows. Window locks are as important as door locks and to do one without the other is simply giving a potential intruder options for easy access. The most common types of locks for windows are sash locks and sliding locks. These are not the only style of window locks available, and depending on the type of windows you have will determine which locks will work best. If you're unsure, don't just buy on a whim, talk to a security professional to make sure your house gets the best all round security it possibly can.
